A heated debate broke out between the government and opposition benches in parliament on Thursday over the introduction of bills and the allocation of chairmanships of parliamentary standing committees.
Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman opposed the introduction of a bill, while Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed defended the move, leading to several rounds of arguments and counterarguments.
The issue of giving opposition lawmakers chairmanships of parliamentary committees also came up.
Shafiqur cited the ninth parliament as a precedent for appointing opposition members as committee chairs.
In response, Salahuddin said the government would allocate committee chairmanships to the opposition according to their parliamentary strength once the July National Charter is implemented.
Heavy also urged the opposition to join the constitutional amendment committee.
Meanwhile, a parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Textiles and Jute was formed with government whip Md Akhteruzzaman Mia as its chairman.
