PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION / BNP collects two nomination papers

The ruling BNP has collected two nomination papers as part of its process to nominate a candidate for the presidential election.

Representatives of the party collected the papers from the office of the returning officer at the Election Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday (August 9).

BNP Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni and party leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi collected the two nomination papers on behalf of the party.

The Election Commission announced the schedule for the presidential election last Thursday. According to the schedule, August 13 is the deadline for submitting nomination papers.

The papers will be scrutinised on August 16, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until 4pm on August 18.

The presidential election will be held on August 20, according to the EC. Voting will take place from 2pm to 5pm in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber.

EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said while announcing the schedule that the Chief Election Commissioner finalised the timetable in consultation with the Speaker in accordance with Section 5(3) of the Presidential Election Act, 1991.

Nomination papers will be received at the returning officer’s office from 10am to 4pm on August 13. Scrutiny will be held at the Election Commission building from 10am on August 16.

The final list of candidates will be determined after scrutiny and the withdrawal period. Members of Parliament will cast their votes in the presidential election.
