US President Donald Trump has claimed that the ongoing war with Iran will end shortly after the November 3 midterm elections, saying Tehran will not be able to withstand continued US military and economic pressure for much longer.
Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters at an airport and addressing a Republican Party midterm election conference in Dallas.
“I think the war will end right after the election because they can’t hold out much longer,” Trump said.
According to Trump, Iran wants to influence the US election and is hoping for a weak American government that would not put pressure on Tehran and would allow it to develop nuclear weapons.
The US midterm elections will be held on November 3, determining which party will control Congress. Midterm elections are generally seen as a referendum of sorts on the performance of the sitting president and his administration.
Trump also said the dispute with Iran is no longer solely about the country’s nuclear programme. “I’m talking about much more than a nuclear deal,” he said.
Trump said the nuclear issue would certainly be part of any future talks with Iran. However, he indicated that several other issues could also come to the negotiating table—issues that would have been unlikely to be discussed just three months ago.
He acknowledged that talks with Iran were possible but made clear that the US was not currently negotiating for a deal.
“We’re not trying to do that. Negotiations could be possible, but it’s not something we’re considering right now,” Trump said.
Trump claimed that inflation in Iran had reached 300% and that the country was facing a severe economic crisis.
He said continued US economic pressure was weakening Iran. Trump also predicted that the end of the war would have an impact on global energy markets, causing oil prices to fall rapidly.
He said his administration would take steps to significantly reduce oil prices after the midterm elections and would seek to bring the price of gasoline below $2 per gallon.
Referring to recent US military operations in the Strait of Hormuz, Trump claimed that the United States had disabled around nine Iranian oil tankers. “You’ll see a lot more. We’ve destroyed about nine of their oil tankers,” he said. Source: Sama TV.
