BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said there is no legal provision for political parties to contest local government elections under party symbols under the existing law.
He made the remarks while responding to a question from journalists after a dinner hosted by Chief Adviser-designate Tarique Rahman with leaders of allied political parties and alliances that took part in the joint anti-government movement.
Asked about local government elections and party nominations, Fakhrul said the issue has not yet been discussed with the allied parties.
“As you know, under the existing law, there is no scope for parties to contest local government elections under party symbols,” he said.
Referring to the legal framework, he added that there was no need to discuss the matter further at this stage, noting that any future decision would be taken through consultations with the allied political parties.
Earlier at the briefing, Fakhrul reiterated the government’s commitment to fully implementing the 31-point reform agenda and the July Charter, alongside highlighting the interim government’s achievements over the past five months.
He also praised the allied political parties for their role in the 15-year movement against what he described as authoritarian rule, saying those who made sacrifices, endured imprisonment, or became victims of enforced disappearance and killings would always be remembered by the nation.
Fakhrul expressed optimism that all political parties would continue working together in unity to build the country in the days ahead.
