President praises PM’s UN speech during first Bangabhaban meeting

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has praised Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), describing it as “far-sighted, firm and direction-setting”.

The president made the remarks when Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban on Tuesday, marking their first meeting since Mirza Fakhrul assumed office as president.

According to a message issued by Bangabhaban, the prime minister arrived at around 3pm, when the president welcomed him. Senior officials of the president’s office, including the military secretary, secretary and press secretary, were later introduced to the prime minister.

During the meeting, Tarique briefed the president on his recent visit to the United States, his participation in the UNGA session and his meetings on the sidelines with heads of state and government, the UN secretary-general and senior UN officials.

He also informed the president about meetings with senior representatives of international economic and development partners and other engagements during the visit.

The president congratulated the prime minister on his “historic” address to the 81st UNGA, saying the speech reflected Bangladesh’s national interests as well as the hopes and aspirations of its people.

He said the address clearly presented Bangladesh’s position on major global issues and described the prime minister’s US visit as significant in further consolidating and strengthening Bangladesh’s position on the international stage.

According to the president, the visit also played an important role in protecting public interests and contributed significantly to expanding and strengthening Bangladesh’s bilateral and multilateral relations.

The two leaders also discussed various issues related to national and state interests during the meeting.

The president thanked the prime minister for visiting Bangabhaban.
