Switzerland reached the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a tense goalless draw over 120 minutes on Tuesday, setting up a blockbuster last-eight clash against defending champions Argentina.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as Switzerland’s hero, producing a crucial save to deny Cucho Hernández in the shootout after Davinson Sánchez had struck the crossbar with Colombia’s opening penalty.

Although Manuel Akanji blasted Switzerland’s third penalty over the bar, Ruben Vargas calmly converted the decisive spot-kick, sending the Swiss into the quarter-finals and ending Colombia’s hopes of matching their best-ever World Cup performance.

The defeat was a bitter blow for Colombia, who were seeking only their second quarter-final appearance after reaching the last eight in Brazil in 2014.

The match offered few clear-cut chances during regulation time, with both teams producing disciplined defensive displays.
Colombia came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 21st minute when Gustavo Puerta curled a powerful effort towards the far corner from outside the penalty area, only for Kobel to produce a brilliant diving save.

Switzerland responded soon afterwards through Fabian Rieder, whose shot from a tight angle was comfortably stopped by Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. The Swiss nearly snatched victory moments into stoppage time when Dan Ndoye burst into the box, but his low effort flashed narrowly wide of the far post.

Extra time proved equally dramatic. Colombia defender Jhon Lucumí came within inches of scoring when his towering header from a corner crashed against the crossbar, while both sides continued to press for a winner without finding the decisive breakthrough.

Colombia entered the match with one of the tournament’s best defensive records, having conceded just once in their previous outings, and again proved difficult to break down.

Switzerland, meanwhile, were forced to cope without one of their standout performers after 20-year-old forward Johan Manzambi, who had scored three goals and provided two assists during the tournament, was ruled out before kick-off with a knee injury sustained in training.

The atmosphere at BC Place was dominated by Colombian supporters, whose sea of yellow turned the stadium into what felt like a home fixture. Their passionate backing created a lively atmosphere throughout, although it was Switzerland who ultimately held their nerve when it mattered most.

Switzerland will now travel to Kansas City for a mouthwatering quarter-final against Argentina, who earlier on Tuesday came from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in another dramatic last-16 encounter led by Lionel Messi.
