Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 after extra time on Saturday to book their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals, where they will face England in a blockbuster last-four clash.

The reigning world champions overcame stubborn Swiss resistance with extra-time goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez after the match had ended 1-1 in normal time.

Argentina took the lead through Alexis Mac Allister, but Switzerland fought back as Dan Ndoye equalised to force the contest into extra time.

The Swiss suffered a major setback in the second half when striker Breel Embolo was sent off, leaving his side to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match.

Argentina eventually capitalised on their numerical advantage in extra time. Álvarez curled home a superb strike before Martínez sealed the victory with a close-range finish to send Lionel Scaloni’s side into the semi-finals.

The victory sets up a mouth-watering showdown with England, who earlier edged Norway 2-1 after extra time thanks to a brace from Jude Bellingham.

Argentina, led by captain Lionel Messi, remain on course to defend the World Cup title they won four years ago and will now seek a place in another final when they meet the Three Lions.
