DHAKA: Storms with winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour may hit 13 districts across Bangladesh by Tuesday night, accompanied by rain and thunderstorms, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said.
According to a weather bulletin issued on Tuesday, temporary gusty or squally winds from the southeast or east, with speeds of 45 to 60 km/h, may affect Rajshahi, Pabna, Faridpur, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet by 1:00 am Wednesday.
River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist warning signal No. 1.
Meanwhile, the weather office said a depression over the Bay of Bengal was moving west-northwest and remained in the same general area.
At 6:00 am Tuesday, the depression was located about 765 km southwest of Chattogram port, 735 km southwest of Cox’s Bazar, 620 km southwest of Mongla and 630 km southwest of Payra port.
The system may move further west-northwest and intensify into a deep depression within the next 12 hours, the Meteorological Department said.
Winds within 44 km of the depression’s centre were reaching 40 km/h, with gusts or squalls reaching up to 50 km/h. The sea remained rough near the centre of the system.
Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports have been advised to keep local cautionary signal No. 3 hoisted.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain close to the coast and operate cautiously until further notice.
