United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric has described Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in Syria’s Idlib province as another “very concerning” violation of Syria’s territorial integrity and airspace, and called for an end to military attacks on the country.
Dujarric made the remarks during a press briefing on Wednesday, according to Al Jazeera, saying the United Nations opposed continued airstrikes in Syria.
“These airstrikes need to stop, and we stand against them,” Dujarric said, according to the report.
The strikes took place early Tuesday at the Abu al-Duhur military airbase, which has gained renewed attention amid changes in Syria’s security landscape and increased regional military activity.
Israel has not publicly characterised the strikes as an attack on Syria’s sovereignty. However, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation targeted an area where advanced military systems belonging to Turkish forces had been deployed.
The Israeli claim could not be independently verified, and Turkey did not immediately issue a detailed response regarding the reported deployment or the Israeli operation.
The latest incident comes amid heightened tensions over foreign military activity in Syria, where Israel, Turkey and other regional actors have security interests. Israel has repeatedly conducted military operations in Syria, saying they are aimed at preventing threats and the transfer or deployment of advanced weapons and military capabilities.
The United Nations has repeatedly called on all parties operating in Syria to respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and avoid actions that could further destabilise the region.
The latest exchange highlights the increasingly complex security environment in Syria, where competing military interests and the presence of foreign forces continue to raise the risk of escalation.
