US President Donald Trump has announced plans to appoint a new artificial intelligence adviser and establish an “AI Force” as his administration seeks to shape the country’s approach to the rapidly developing technology.
Trump made the announcement in a post on Truth Social on Saturday, but provided few details about the proposed adviser or the structure, responsibilities and implementation of the new AI Force.
The announcement comes amid growing debate in Washington over the potential risks posed by increasingly powerful AI systems and the need for government oversight.
Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon has warned that uncontrolled AI development could pose a severe threat to humanity by the end of the decade. His warning came as concerns have intensified among AI researchers and technology experts over the ability to control increasingly autonomous systems.
Trump, however, has continued to oppose additional federal restrictions that he says could hamper the growth of the US AI industry. In his latest post, he indicated that his administration did not intend to “hinder or stifle” the industry and pointed to existing criminal and civil justice systems as mechanisms for dealing with harmful activity.
The proposed AI Force could also have implications for the US-China technology competition. The announcement comes shortly before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to Washington, while senior US and Chinese officials are preparing to discuss AI security and other economic issues.
It remains unclear whether the new AI Force would primarily focus on strengthening US AI development, coordinating government policy and national security efforts, or overseeing risks associated with the technology.
The Trump administration has already taken steps to expand AI use in national security. In June, the White House announced a directive aimed at accelerating the adoption of advanced AI systems across the US national security establishment while emphasizing security, reliability and accountability.
The lack of details surrounding the latest proposal is likely to leave questions in Washington over how the new AI czar and AI Force would fit into the existing federal AI policy structure and whether they would have regulatory or primarily advisory powers.Source: Reuters
