Powerful Typhoon Dujuan has battered Japan with strong winds and heavy rain, prompting authorities to order nearly 2 million people to evacuate as landslides and flooding caused widespread disruption.
At least two people have been killed and four others remain missing, according to the BBC. The missing people are residents of Kanagawa Prefecture, where rescue teams are searching for them.
Japan’s weather agency had warned that the typhoon could pose an “immediate major threat” to lives. Although alert levels have since been lowered in some areas, authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow the latest weather updates.
More than 50,000 people have been left without electricity, while hundreds of flights have been cancelled. Train services have also been suspended in several areas.
Dujuan brought sustained winds of around 130 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 194 kilometres per hour.
The storm has also caused fatalities linked to landslides. A woman in her 60s died in Yokosuka, while another person was killed in Sodegaura, Chiba Prefecture.
Several events, including the Rock in Japan music festival and some programmes at the Tokyo Game Show, were cancelled due to the typhoon.
Dujuan is the 25th typhoon to hit Japan this year. It is currently moving northward along the country’s Pacific coast, while authorities continue to assess the damage and gather reports of further casualties.
