Canada is sending a nearly 300-member trade delegation to India in a major push to expand bilateral trade and rebuild economic ties, marking its largest trade mission to the country in three decades.

Led by Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu, the delegation is taking part in business programmes in Mumbai and Bengaluru from October 12 to 17 under the “Team Canada Trade Mission” initiative.

According to a report by Indian media outlet Moneycontrol, the two countries aim to conclude negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of this year.

The mission will explore opportunities to strengthen commercial partnerships in aerospace, aviation, agriculture, clean technology, energy, information and communications technology, and life sciences.

Canada and India have set a target of increasing bilateral trade to 70 billion Canadian dollars by 2030.

Official Canadian figures show that trade in goods and services between the two countries totalled 30.4 billion Canadian dollars in 2025. Canada exported goods worth 3.9 billion Canadian dollars to India, while imports from India reached 9.7 billion Canadian dollars.

Canadian direct investment in India stood at 11.4 billion Canadian dollars, while Indian direct investment in Canada amounted to 9.7 billion Canadian dollars.

The latest trade initiative follows the fifth round of CEPA negotiations, held in Ottawa from October 5 to 9. No official announcement has yet been made on the outcome of the discussions.

Earlier, on October 1, Sidhu held talks with Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on the sidelines of a G20 trade ministers’ meeting.

Relations between the two countries deteriorated in 2023, but both sides are now seeking to restore economic cooperation.

Canada is looking to diversify its export markets beyond the United States, while India continues to pursue trade agreements with multiple countries.

The renewed engagement could help expand bilateral commerce, attract fresh investment and create employment opportunities in both countries.
