Malaysia and Bangladesh are exploring new areas of cooperation in rural development, infrastructure, renewable energy and investment, building on the positive momentum generated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to Malaysia.
Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Mohammad Shuhada Othman made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan on Sunday.
During the meeting, the high commissioner congratulated Abdul Moyeen Khan on his recent appointment as minister and wished him a successful tenure. The two sides discussed ways to further deepen the longstanding and friendly relations between Malaysia and Bangladesh.
The high commissioner stressed the importance of turning the momentum generated by the recent high-level engagement into practical and mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors.
The discussions focused particularly on rural development and infrastructure. Bangladesh expressed interest in learning from Malaysia’s experience and approaches to improving the quality of life in rural communities, including agricultural development and rural connectivity.
Bangladesh also expressed interest in Malaysia’s expertise in using rubberised bitumen for road construction and maintenance.
The Malaysian experience in developing durable road infrastructure under conditions of heavy rainfall and similar climatic conditions was identified as an area where the two countries could explore greater technical cooperation and knowledge exchange.
Abdul Moyeen Khan stressed that connectivity and reliable electricity supply were essential to improving living standards in rural areas.
In this regard, he invited Malaysian companies to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh’s renewable energy sector, particularly solar power. Such investments could help support rural development while meeting the country’s growing energy demand, he said.
The meeting also discussed strengthening technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to better prepare Bangladesh’s workforce, as well as exploring greater cooperation in sports to strengthen people-to-people ties.
The high commissioner highlighted Malaysia’s existing investment presence in Bangladesh, including Rabi Axiata and edotco Group, and pointed to opportunities for greater Malaysian participation in Bangladesh’s expanding economy and emerging sectors.
The two sides also exchanged views on emerging areas of cooperation, including technology and the semiconductor sector, as Malaysia and Bangladesh seek to broaden their economic partnership beyond traditional areas of collaboration.
The meeting reflected the two countries’ commitment to maintaining the momentum of recent high-level engagements and translating them into practical, forward-looking and mutually beneficial cooperation, further strengthening the longstanding Malaysia-Bangladesh partnership.
