Two leaders of the Airport Thana unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal have been expelled from their organisational posts after being arrested in a case filed over the alleged snatching of gold ornaments from a migrant worker’s brother.
Airport Thana Chhatra Dal president Md Ripon Hossain and general secretary Al-Amin Hossain Shanto were removed from their posts over what the organisation described as specific allegations of violating organisational discipline.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by Dhaka North Chhatra Dal on Monday (August 31).
According to the statement, the decision was approved by Dhaka North Chhatra Dal president Md Salahuddin Ahmed and general secretary Mahfuz-ur-Rahman.
All Chhatra Dal leaders and activists at every level were also instructed not to maintain any organisational ties with the two expelled leaders.
Police arrested Ripon, Al-Amin and another person on Sunday (August 30) over allegations that they snatched gold from the brother of a migrant worker near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The arrests were made in connection with a case filed with Airport Police Station.
According to the case statement, Narsingdi resident and Malaysia expatriate Kawsar sent 200 grammes of gold ornaments from Malaysia on August 28 for his sister’s wedding and family use.
At around 8pm that day, Kawsar’s younger brother Md Suman and his friend Rohan Chowdhury left the airport in a rented Hiace vehicle carrying the gold.
The case statement alleges that around 8:05pm, the accused intercepted their vehicle on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway opposite Balaka Bhaban under Airport Police Station.
They allegedly assaulted the two men after accusing them of being Awami League and Chhatra League activists and claiming that they were carrying a bomb.
The accused then allegedly took 200 grammes of gold ornaments from them.
In the case, Airport organisational unit BNP president Abdur Rauf was named the prime accused, while Airport Thana Chhatra Dal president Ripon, general secretary Al-Amin Shanto and Airport organisational ward BNP general secretary Rubel were named as the second, third and fourth accused respectively.
