Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has condemned Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, describing it as “genocide” during his address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.

Sánchez said Spain “condemns without qualification” what he described as the genocide that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to perpetrate in Gaza. His remarks were reported during the UN General Assembly debate in New York.

He said Spain had consistently opposed wars of aggression and maintained that this position applied to conflicts in Ukraine, Lebanon and Iran. Sánchez also reiterated his government’s opposition to actions that violate the UN Charter and international law.

The Spanish prime minister said his government remained committed to maintaining sanctions against Russia and to an arms embargo on Netanyahu’s government. He also said Spain would not allow its territory to be used for military aggression that violates international law.

Sánchez has previously taken a strong position on the Gaza conflict. In September 2025, he announced additional measures against what he called the “genocide in Gaza” and said Spain would strengthen restrictions related to Israel.

The UN secretary-general, in his opening address to the 81st General Assembly on September 22, said the scale of killing and destruction in Gaza was unprecedented in his years as secretary-general and stressed that all parties must comply with international law and International Court of Justice orders.
