The Bangladesh Primary Teachers Association has threatened to launch a movement unless the government implements the promised 11th pay grade for government primary school assistant teachers and meets several other demands.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, the association called for the immediate implementation of the 11th grade, provision of higher pay grades, promotion opportunities for all eligible assistant teachers to headteacher positions, cancellation of allegedly harassing transfers and withdrawal of departmental cases against teachers.
The association said the 11th pay grade should be introduced in line with commitments made under the proposed ninth national pay scale.
It also demanded that teachers who have completed eight and 14 years of service receive the two higher grades they say they are entitled to under the pay-scale provisions.
The association further called for a system ensuring promotion of assistant teachers to headteacher positions based on seniority, with all eligible teachers receiving promotion opportunities.
Demanding relief from what it described as harassment, the association urged the authorities to cancel transfer orders affecting teachers, including teachers’ leader Khairun Nahar Lipi, and withdraw all departmental cases it considers baseless and intended to harass teachers.
Earlier, the association held a human chain and a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) to present its demands.
Mohammad Sirajul Islam, policy-making chairman of the association, read out the written statement at the press conference, while its President Md Moazzem Hossain Shaheen and General Secretary Khairun Nahar Lipi also addressed the event.
