SAVAR: Police have arrested two officials of a garment factory in Ashulia, Savar, for allegedly organising a birthday event for Sheikh Hasina, president of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned.

The two were arrested from the Sintex garment factory in the Palashbari area of Ashulia on Tuesday night. They were produced before a court on Wednesday (September 30) morning and were subsequently sent to jail custody following a hearing.

The arrested officials were identified as Md Rubel Islam, a former assistant secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League unit at Carmichael College in Rangpur, and Md Shahin. Both are employed as swing supervisors at the factory.

According to police sources, people from outside the factory were brought in on Tuesday night for a special event allegedly organised to mark Sheikh Hasina’s birthday. The two officials, along with several factory employees and outsiders, reportedly attended the event.

Police said videos of the programme were recorded and circulated to various locations. Acting on intelligence information, police later conducted a raid at the factory and arrested the two officials.

Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Anwar Hossain confirmed the arrests, saying the two were being questioned and the allegations were being verified.

He said the suspects were sent to jail custody after being produced before a court on Wednesday. Police operations are continuing to identify and arrest others allegedly involved in organising the event, he added.
