Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with senior Iranian officials on bilateral relations, regional security and international developments amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Lavrov met his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, and the two countries’ diplomatic delegations began consultations following the meeting, according to reports by Iranian state broadcaster IRIB and the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation, implementing existing agreements and addressing the regional crisis.

Lavrov is also scheduled to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the visit.

The visit comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran, the United States and Gulf countries.

Moscow has been seeking to maintain diplomatic engagement across the region and promote dialogue to prevent further escalation.

Lavrov travelled to Tehran after attending a meeting with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members in Bahrain, where regional leaders urged Russia to use its influence to help ease tensions and restore maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Russia and Iran have strengthened their political, economic and security ties in recent years.

In January 2025, the two countries signed a 20-year comprehensive strategic partnership treaty covering areas including defence, energy, trade, transport and security cooperation.

The Tehran talks are part of ongoing consultations between Moscow and Tehran as both countries seek closer coordination on regional and international issues.
