The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has identified all 10 people killed in a devastating fire at Tup Tup Restaurant and Resort in Inani’s Patuartek area of Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, through DNA testing. One woman reported missing after the incident remains unaccounted for.

The DNA samples of Nasrin Akter Mukta, 27, did not match any of the 10 bodies recovered from the resort, raising further questions about her whereabouts.

Rimon Ghosh, the investigation officer of the case filed with Ukhiya Police Station, confirmed the findings on Monday night, saying the DNA test results had been received and the identities of all 10 victims had been established.

He said the bodies were scheduled to be handed over to their families on Tuesday, October 27. Investigators were also expected to brief the media on the progress of the case.

Six victims belonged to a family from Dhaka’s Banasree and Khilgaon areas. They were identified as Moulita Mehzabin Alvi, 19; Laila Jahan Nabila, 25; Israt Jahan Maliha, 27; Faria Kabir, 33; Faria’s six-year-old son, Mohammad Faizan Noor; and her brother, Mohammad Nafis Tehami, 24.

Nafis, also known as Jerif, studied Chinese Language and Culture at the Institute of Modern Languages of the University of Dhaka during the 2020–21 academic session.

Alvi was studying Population and Public Health Sciences at East West University, while Nabila was a student in the Chemistry Department of Jagannath University.

The other four victims belonged to a family from Dhaka’s Shyamoli. They were identified as Mohammad Nahidur Rahman, 41, an official of Grand Power Limited; his wife, Afsana Matin, 36; and their two daughters, Rozaina Inaya, 9, and Munaina Ihana, 6.

The family’s permanent home was in Manirampur upazila of Jashore, according to reports.

Mukta, a teacher at Swapnabilash Niribili School in Ashulia, Savar, had travelled to Cox’s Bazar with two friends, according to the report. Her husband, Dewan Faisal, is a former leader of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal in Dhaka district. Her father’s name is Mostafa Kamal.

Although 10 bodies were recovered from the resort after the fire, 11 people were initially reported missing. The failure to match Mukta’s DNA with any of the recovered bodies has left her whereabouts unresolved.

Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman said further investigations were underway to locate her.

The fire broke out at the resort near the Marine Drive in Inani on October 17, when authorities recovered 10 bodies from the scene. The investigation is continuing to establish the full circumstances of the tragedy.
