Garment workers blocked a key road in Mirpur on Sunday, the first working day of the week, causing severe traffic disruption and immense suffering for commuters.

Police moved to disperse the protesters, using tear gas, sound grenades and water cannons. The workers retaliated by throwing brickbats at police and setting fire to a police box, turning Mirpur-10 into a battleground.

The workers took to the streets in the morning demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.

Police tried to persuade them to clear the road until around 11:00am. As they refused to leave, police launched an operation at around 11:20am.

Clashes and chases between police and garment workers were continuing, as law enforcers attempted to disperse the protesters.

The workers took positions on roads connecting Mirpur-10 to Mirpur-14 and Pallabi, while police continued efforts to remove them.

SI Hafizul Islam, the duty officer at Mirpur Police Station, said police were working to clear the roads and remove the garment workers.
