Police have arrested 28 activist of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations over alleged violence, sabotage attempts and arson during garment workers’ protests in Mirpur, Dhaka, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.

According to police, 11 people were arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in connection with alleged plans for sabotage and clashes in Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11 and adjoining areas.

Another 17 were detained by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Mirpur division while allegedly preparing to stage a violent procession.

Police claimed that the arrested individuals were active members of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations.

They allegedly infiltrated the workers’ movement and attempted to instigate violence and set fire to vehicles.

The arrests came amid clashes between protesters and police on Sunday, during which a police vehicle was set on fire near Mirpur-11 metro station.

The unrest also forced the temporary suspension of metro rail services at Pallabi, Mirpur-11 and Mirpur-10 stations.

Police said investigations were underway to identify others allegedly involved in the violence.
