US President Donald Trump has congratulated Democrats on their victories in the midterm elections, while reminding them of his veto power.

In a telephone interview with CBS News, Trump said he believed Democrats would want to work with him.

“Otherwise, I will veto everything, and they certainly don’t want that,” he said.

Trump blamed the Republicans’ losses in the midterm elections partly on his absence from the ballot, saying the party would have won had he been a candidate.

“I felt that I wasn’t on the ballot. There was nothing I could do about it. If I had been on the ballot, we would have won,” he said.

Explaining the Republican setbacks, Trump said some candidates were unpopular with voters, while others were not his friends.

“Some candidates, in certain cases, voters didn’t like. And some candidates weren’t my friends, and the supporters know that better than anybody else. So they didn’t go out to vote. They didn’t have that enthusiasm,” he said.

Asked whether he was disappointed by the results, Trump said he had done his best and had “fought hard” on the campaign trail.
