Bangladesh’s mango capital, Chapainawabganj, is expecting mango trade worth more than Tk 20 billion during the current harvesting season, driven by bumper production, favourable weather, strong domestic demand and continued export activities, according to officials.

Visits to major mango markets in the district showed brisk trading since the beginning of the season. The country’s largest mango market at Kansat has remained busy with buyers and traders, while thousands of maunds of mangoes are also being traded daily at the Rohanpur, Bholahat and Chapainawabganj Sadar Old Mango Markets.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), mangoes have been cultivated on 37,487 hectares across the district’s five upazilas this season. The production target has been set at around 458,000 tonnes, and if production and market conditions remain favourable, the total value of mango trade is expected to exceed Tk 20 billion.

Manik, a mango wholesaler at the Sadarghat market, said prices have been fluctuating on a daily basis. At present, Fazli mangoes are selling at Tk 1,800-2,600 per maund, Amrapali at Tk 4,000-4,200, and BARI-4 variety at Tk 3,000-3,200 per maund.

Munjer Alam Manik, general secretary of the Chapainawabganj Agriculture Association, said the district accounts for nearly one-third of the country’s total mango production. He noted that establishing mango-based processing industries would significantly increase value addition in the sector while creating new employment opportunities.

Md Bulbul Ahmed, additional deputy director (Horticulture) of the district DAE, said mango production has been satisfactory this season and farmers are also receiving fair prices. He expressed optimism that, if favourable conditions continue, the value of mango trade in Chapainawabganj will surpass Tk 20 billion this year.
