At least eight people were killed and 34 others remain missing after a landslide struck Pengshui County in southwest China’s Chongqing municipality on Friday, local authorities said.
The landslide occurred at around 9:10am local time (0110 GMT), prompting a large-scale emergency response.
More than 800 rescuers have been deployed to search for survivors and assist affected residents, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for all-out rescue efforts and urged authorities to carry out comprehensive inspections of areas vulnerable to geological disasters to prevent further tragedies.
Rescue operations are continuing as authorities assess the extent of the damage and search for those still unaccounted for.
