KUSHTIA: Kushtia-3 (Sadar) MP Mufti Amir Hamza visited the family of journalist Debashish Dutta, who was killed in a fire in Kolkata, India, and expressed his condolences. He also assured the bereaved family of his support.
Amir Hamza visited Debashish Dutta’s home in Aruapara, Kushtia city, at around 11pm on Wednesday (August 19). He spoke with the journalist’s parents and his eight-year-old daughter and inquired about the family’s well-being.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Amir Hamza said, “I have met the family. I will look into what kind of assistance can be provided at the government level.” He also assured the family that he would personally take responsibility for supporting the deceased journalist’s daughter’s education.
Amir Hamza further said, “I will speak with the head teacher of the girl’s school and try to make arrangements so that she can continue her studies. We will also regularly keep in touch with the family. Regardless of political affiliation, opinion, religion or caste, I will try to work for the welfare of people.”
He added, “I feel deeply saddened when I look at the girl. She has become completely helpless. I will do my best to make arrangements for her education and try to stand by her.”
Meanwhile, a devastating fire broke out early Wednesday (August 19) at a residential hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in the New Market area of Kolkata, killing nine people. Four members of the same family from Kushtia were among the victims.
The deceased were Debashish Dutta, 37, acting editor of the Kushtia-based daily Ajker Alo and Kushtia district correspondent for Ajker Patrika and Channel Nine; his wife, Afsana Shimmin, 25; their two-year-old son Sharnashish Dutta; and Debashish’s father-in-law, Akram Ali, 64, a resident of Thanapara in Kushtia city.
The death of four members of the family has cast a pall of grief over Debashish Dutta’s home. The atmosphere has been filled with the wailing of relatives, while the journalist’s colleagues and the local journalist community have expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.
