Dhaka: Cox’s Bazar Airport is likely to be inaugurated as an international airport in the first week of November, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat said on Monday.
The inauguration date will be announced after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s availability is confirmed, the minister told a meeting on launching international flight operations from Cox’s Bazar Airport at the Secretariat.
The prime minister is scheduled to visit Japan from October 26 to 29. “The inauguration date will be announced after the Prime Minister’s availability is confirmed following his return,” Millat said.
He said he had already discussed the inauguration of the airport as an international facility with the prime minister and expressed hope that the ceremony could be held in early November.
“The Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the airport,” he added.
The minister said discussions were underway with relevant stakeholders to determine which airlines would operate international flights from Cox’s Bazar.
A decision on the participating airlines would be made after consultations with the parties concerned, he said.
Millat added that it was too early to confirm how many international flights would operate from the airport or which countries would be connected to Cox’s Bazar.
Further details would be available after discussions with the airlines concerned, he said.
