DHAKA, Oct 12: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has said Bangladesh will extend a helping hand to Saudi Arabia if the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah face any security threats.
“We will certainly not stand idle if Makkah and Madinah face any threat,” she told reporters after a seminar organised by the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) in Dhaka on Monday.
She said the two holy cities hold deep religious and emotional significance for Muslims worldwide, making their security more than a diplomatic issue.
Asked whether Bangladesh would join the proposed Makkah Pact and send troops to Saudi Arabia if requested, Shama said Bangladesh had not formally joined the pact yet.
Therefore, the question of deploying troops did not arise at this stage.
She said Bangladesh stood in solidarity with the Saudi government and people amid the ongoing conflict and called for an immediate end to the hostilities.
The prime minister has also sent a letter to the Saudi crown prince regarding the situation, she added.
Her remarks came amid escalating regional tensions and recent attacks in Saudi Arabia that have reportedly killed and injured Bangladeshi nationals.
