Four people, including two women, were killed and two others injured after a pickup truck overturned in Rangamati early Sunday.
The accident occurred in the Manikchhari area in front of the Manikchhari Army Camp in Sapchhari union of Rangamati Sadar upazila around dawn.
According to police and local sources, the pickup was carrying several passengers from Rangamati town towards Kutukchhari Bazar. When it reached Manikchhari, the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned, leaving several passengers seriously injured.
The injured were taken to Rangamati General Hospital, where doctors declared four of them dead.
The deceased were identified as Meghrani Chakma, Shantana Chakma, Shobha Chakma and Shanti Ranjan Chakma. Three of the bodies were kept at the hospital’s emergency department.
Hospital officials said six people were brought to the facility following the accident. Three were already dead, while another critically injured passenger was referred to Chattogram but died on the way.
The pickup driver, Gyan Bikash Chakma, and another passenger, Sumon Chakma, are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Rangamati General Hospital resident medical officer Dr Shawkat Akbar confirmed the casualties.
Kotwali Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Tofazzal Hossain said police were preparing the inquest reports and that procedures were underway to hand over the bodies to their families.
