Bangladesh received more than Tk1,000 crore in remittances every day during the first four days of July, maintaining the strong inflow that has boosted the country’s foreign exchange earnings in recent months.
Expatriate Bangladeshis sent home US$349 million between July 1 and July 4, equivalent to Tk4,304.6 crore at an exchange rate of Tk123 per US dollar. This translates into an average daily inflow of US$87.3 million, or more than Tk1,076 crore.
Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan disclosed the figures on Sunday. During the corresponding period last year, the country received US$360 million in remittances.
The latest inflow follows another robust performance in June, when remittances reached US$2.817 billion. Of the total, state-owned banks handled US$515.1 million, specialised banks US$441.7 million, private commercial banks US$1.854 billion and foreign banks US$661,000.
In May, remittance inflows stood at US$3.425 billion, the second-highest monthly total in the country’s history. April recorded US$3.127 billion.
Bangladesh achieved its highest-ever monthly remittance inflow in March, when expatriates sent a record US$3.755 billion, underscoring the growing contribution of overseas workers to the country’s economy.
