Following the heaviest rainfall in 42 years that triggered widespread waterlogging and disrupted normal life, the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has formed a 101-member Rapid Response Team to ensure emergency services during disasters.

The announcement was made on Tuesday (July 7) by CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain during a meeting with volunteers of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society at the city corporation office.

The mayor said the team, jointly formed by CCC and the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, will provide rapid emergency response during disasters. Acting CCC Chief Executive Officer and Secretary Md. Ashraful Amin has been appointed convener, while Chattogram City Red Crescent Secretary Golam Baki Masud will serve as member secretary.

The Red Crescent also urged residents to seek emergency assistance by calling 01805-783389 whenever needed.

The mayor said a 24-hour monitoring cell has also been established with the support of Red Crescent volunteers to respond immediately to any emergency.

Earlier in the day, he visited several flood-prone areas, including Chattogram Medical College Hospital, Katalganj, Tigerpass and Panchlaish, and instructed officials to strengthen monitoring and take necessary precautionary measures. He also urged residents in high-risk areas to move to shelters or safer locations if required.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Chattogram received 412 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, the highest in 42 years. The previous record was 511 mm of rainfall recorded on August 4, 1983.
