A Bangladeshi farmer was injured when India’s Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire along the Jamalpur border in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia on Saturday morning.

The injured farmer, Sajul Hossain, 30, is the son of Sabaj Hossain of Jamalpur village.

The incident occurred around 9:30am near border pillar 152/10-S, according to local residents and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Locals said Sajul was cutting grass near the zero line when a patrol team from the BSF’s 146 Battalion opened fire, leaving him injured.

A patrol team from the BGB’s Jamalpur Border Outpost (BOP) quickly took position and returned fire in self-defence and to protect local residents, according to a press release issued by the BGB’s 47 Battalion.

The BGB has intensified patrols and surveillance along the border and placed its personnel on high alert.

Lieutenant Colonel Rashed Kamal Roni, commanding officer of the Kushtia Battalion (47 BGB), said the injured farmer was rescued and taken to hospital. BGB personnel were monitoring the situation at the scene, he added.

Daulatpur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Touhid Hasan Tuhin said Sajul received initial treatment at Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Kushtia General Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, local residents claimed to have detained an Indian citizen following the incident. BGB officials have not confirmed the claim, saying further details would be provided after an investigation.
