Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former MP Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman, a decorated Liberation War veteran, was released from jail on Tuesday morning after spending nearly a month in custody in a case filed over allegations of obstructing government duties and misbehaving with officials at Dhaka airport.
He walked out of Dhaka Central Jail on Tuesday (November 3).
After news of his release spread, leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami gathered outside the prison to welcome him. Several senior central leaders of the party were also present. They greeted Akhtaruzzaman with flowers as he emerged from the jail, with supporters expressing joy and relief at his release.
According to the case statement, 34 representatives of Jamaat-e-Islami arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka from Medina with their family members on the morning of October 1.
A dispute reportedly broke out between passengers and airport officials over a shortage of luggage trolleys and delays in providing Zamzam water during baggage collection. The situation eventually turned disorderly.
Following the incident, airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed a case with Airport Police Station against Akhtaruzzaman and several others, accusing them of obstructing government duties and physically assaulting a security official.
On October 2, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his residence in the cantonment area of the capital.
After a remand hearing, an additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court in Dhaka rejected his bail petition on October 4 and ordered him to be sent to jail.
He later failed to secure bail from the sessions court and subsequently moved the High Court.
Akhtaruzzaman was finally released on Tuesday morning after spending nearly a month behind bars.
