Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will travel to Türkiye on November 10 to attend the 31st UN Climate Change Conference (COP31), Environment and Forest Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo said on Thursday.
Briefing reporters at the Secretariat, Mintoo said Bangladesh loses an estimated $15.2 billion annually due to climate change and would raise its loss and damage demands at the conference.
The prime minister’s special assistant on environment, Dr Saimum Pervez, said Bangladesh would seek an increase in the amount allocated for loss and damage, while working with other countries to ensure that vulnerable nations receive funding.
He said Bangladesh would pursue the demands collectively with like-minded countries.
COP31 is scheduled to take place in Türkiye’s Antalya from November 9 to 20. Türkiye will hold the conference presidency, while Australia will lead the formal negotiations.
The conference is expected to focus not only on new commitments but also on implementing decisions made at previous climate summits.
