Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate a three-month special cleanliness and public awareness campaign to prevent dengue on Saturday (September 12).
Considering the next three months a high-risk period for dengue, the prime minister has urged people across the country to actively participate in the campaign.
He gave the directives at a meeting on dengue prevention at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (September 8).
The prime minister said dengue control should not rely solely on mosquito-killing measures, stressing the need to give greater importance to cleanliness and public awareness.
He called for coordinated field-level activities involving local administrations, volunteer organisations and students.
Under the programme, city corporations will coordinate activities in metropolitan areas, while deputy commissioners will oversee initiatives at the district level. Upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) will coordinate activities at the upazila level.
Volunteers from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, scouts, Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC), Girl Guides, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, as well as school and college students, will participate in the cleanliness and awareness campaign.
Every Saturday, volunteers and students will visit homes and other establishments to take part in cleaning activities. They will also identify potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes and raise awareness about keeping homes and surrounding areas clean.
The prime minister also directed authorities to conduct extensive publicity campaigns through the mass media and social media. He particularly stressed television-based awareness programmes and regular dissemination of dengue prevention messages on social media.
“”The next three months are crucial for the dengue situation,” the prime minister said, stressing that active public participation must complement government initiatives.
He urged people to keep homes, educational institutions, government and private establishments, and surrounding areas clean on a regular basis.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman Partha, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr MA Muhit, State Minister for Information Yaser Khan Chowdhury and senior officials of the relevant ministries and departments attended the meeting.
