Senior leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh met the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday to learn about the latest progress in the investigation into the alleged killings during the 2013 Shapla Chattar crackdown in Dhaka.
The delegation, led by the group’s Senior Vice Amir Abdul Hamid (Pir of Madhupur), included 10 to 15 leaders, among them Joint Secretary General Maulana Mamunul Haque, Mufti Harun Izhar, and Mufti Mir Idris.
They held talks with Chief Prosecutor Advocate Aminul Islam at his office in the morning.
Following the meeting, Aminul Islam said the investigation agency has already submitted its report to the prosecution, and it is currently under review.
He confirmed that the report is scheduled to be formally submitted to the tribunal on July 21, with a detailed briefing on the findings expected later.
According to the Chief Prosecutor, the investigation has so far confirmed 32 deaths in Dhaka alone. However, the final death toll has yet to be determined, as the probe is still in its final stage.
Prosecution sources indicate that 41 individuals have been named as accused in the investigation report, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed, journalists Mozammel Babu and Farzana Rupa, and writer Shahriar Kabir. Officials said further details will be disclosed during the official briefing.
The case originates from the events of May 5, 2013, when Hefazat-e-Islam held a mass rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel to press a 13-point demand.
After a day of clashes and heightened tension, a joint operation by police, RAB, and BGB cleared the area late at night. Allegations of multiple deaths during the operation have since led to an ongoing investigation at the ICT.
