Malaysia has reopened its labour market to Bangladeshi workers following prolonged discussions and diplomatic efforts, with 10,000 workers set to be sent to the country at no cost under a new arrangement.
The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment announced the development in a press release signed by its Public Relations Officer, Shariful Islam, on Thursday (October 15).
Under the new arrangement, Malaysian authorities have agreed to enlist 338 Bangladeshi recruiting agencies to ensure a transparent and orderly recruitment process. The list includes state-owned Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL), 25 processing agencies and 312 recruiting agencies.
Interested workers will be able to complete the recruitment process through the listed and approved agencies. They will also have to undergo medical examinations at authorised medical centres.
The ministry said no single medical centre would be given exclusive authority to conduct the examinations. The government aims to ensure that workers can travel to Malaysia through an accessible and transparent process without monopolistic control.
The Bangladesh government thanked the Malaysian prime minister, the country’s Ministry of Human Resources and the relevant authorities for their cooperation in reopening the labour market and creating new employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers.
The press release added that the government, recruiting agencies and workers would need to work together to make the new opportunity successful.
The government expects the initiative to help establish a long-term, orderly and sustainable labour market for Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia.
