Traffic police in Dhaka on Wednesday launched a special enforcement drive against noise pollution, seizing illegal hydraulic horns from several vehicles in an effort to make the capital’s streets quieter and safer.
The operation was conducted at Tantibazar intersection under the initiative of the Traffic Lalbagh Division. The campaign ran from 10:00am to 4:00pm and focused on curbing the use of unauthorised hydraulic horns, which are considered a major source of excessive noise pollution in the city.
The drive was led by Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Pahan Chakma of the Kotwali Traffic Zone under the Traffic Lalbagh Division, alongside Assistant Police Commissioner AKM Manzurul Alam.
Traffic Inspector Bidyut Kumar, Traffic Inspector Abdullah Ibne Jewel, Traffic Sergeant TSI and other traffic sergeants stationed at Tantibazar also took part in the operation.
During the day-long campaign, police seized hydraulic horns from nine vehicles found using the prohibited devices. Legal action was taken against the offenders in accordance with existing laws.
Police officials said the use of hydraulic horns not only violates traffic regulations but also contributes significantly to noise pollution, posing health risks to pedestrians, commuters and local residents. They noted that prolonged exposure to excessive traffic noise can lead to stress, hearing impairment and other health complications.
The Traffic Lalbagh Division said such enforcement drives will continue across different parts of the capital to discourage the use of illegal horns and promote greater compliance with traffic laws.
Authorities also urged drivers and vehicle owners to avoid fitting prohibited horns to their vehicles and to cooperate with efforts aimed at reducing noise pollution in Dhaka.
