Investigators have so far identified 85 people who were killed in Jatrabari during the July-August 2024 mass uprising, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Mohammad Tajul Islam said.
Speaking to reporters after a tribunal hearing on Sunday, Tajul Islam said the figure is based on evidence collected by the investigation agency and represents the number of victims identified so far. He noted that the toll could change as the investigation continues and additional evidence is verified.
The Chief Prosecutor said the Jatrabari incident is among the most serious cases under investigation for alleged crimes against humanity. He added that investigators are collecting witness testimonies, video footage, forensic evidence and other documents to establish the full sequence of events and identify those responsible.
The tribunal is currently hearing multiple cases related to the 2024 uprising, including incidents in Jatrabari, where prosecutors allege security forces used excessive and lethal force against demonstrators. Previous investigations, including one by BBC Eye, documented at least 52 deaths in the area on 5 August 2024, while the ICT investigation has now identified 85 victims as part of its ongoing probe.
