BTV moves to change its iconic red-and-green logo

Bangladesh Television (BTV) has announced an initiative to redesign its iconic red-and-green logo, which has been associated with the state-run broadcaster for decades.

BTV recently published a video announcement on its verified Facebook page inviting people to submit their ideas or logo designs as part of its plan to give the broadcaster a “new look.” The deadline for submissions is September 10, 2026.

The existing logo features a rising red sun inside a green television frame, symbolising Bangladesh’s national colours.

The design was created by artist Imdad Hossain, with contributions from renowned artists Qamrul Hassan and Mustafa Monwar, as well as art designer Mohiuddin Faruk.

BTV Director General Kazi Jesin said the logo change is part of a broader effort to modernise the organisation, including its organisational structure, artists’ remuneration and news presentation.

However, he stressed that BTV intends to preserve its history and heritage.

He said the logo would not be changed if people do not want it, and any new design would be developed while preserving the institution’s historical legacy and the contributions of eminent artists.

The proposed change has already sparked debate, with several cultural and media personalities questioning whether the historic logo should be replaced.

Critics argue that the logo is more than a corporate identity—it has become part of Bangladesh’s broadcasting history and collective memory.

BTV began television broadcasting in Dhaka in 1964, before Bangladesh’s independence, and became Bangladesh Television after independence in 1972.

For now, BTV has not unveiled any new design. The final decision will depend on the submitted proposals and the broader consultation process.
