The International Crimes Tribunal has set October 7 for a hearing on framing charges in the case over alleged crimes against humanity surrounding the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka’s Motijheel in 2013.
The tribunal-2 passed the order on Wednesday.
During the hearing, the prosecution said newspaper notices had been published asking 30 fugitive accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, to surrender. As they did not comply, the prosecution sought to begin proceedings in their absence and appoint state-funded lawyers to represent them.
The tribunal accepted the application and fixed October 7 for the charge-framing hearing.
Of the 41 accused in the case, 11 who are in custody were produced before the tribunal on Wednesday morning.
According to the prosecution, a total of 58 people were killed in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Chattogram and Cumilla during events surrounding the Hefazat rally on May 5, 2013. The investigation agency has identified 32 victims in Dhaka, 20 in Narayanganj, five in Chattogram and one in Cumilla.
The accused include former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
