A 75-year-old inmate of Keraniganj Central Jail died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after falling ill in prison, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Borhan Uddin, inmate number 2911/A. His father was Mansur Ali and his home was in Katiarchar area under Kotwali police station in Kishoreganj.
Prison authorities did not disclose the case in which Borhan had been detained.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said Borhan suddenly fell ill at the jail shortly after midnight on Thursday.
He was then taken to the hospital’s emergency department on the instructions of the prison authorities. Doctors admitted him to Ward 701 of the Medicine Department.
“He died while undergoing treatment around 8am on Friday,” Inspector Habibur Rahman said.
The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy, he said, adding that the prison authorities have been informed.
The body will be handed over to the family after the inquest and autopsy in the presence of an executive magistrate, the police official said.
