A 35-year-old man was killed and his cousin sustained burn injuries after a gas cylinder exploded at a house in the Mukim Bazar area of Bangshal in the capital early Friday.
The incident occurred at around 4:30 am on the ground floor of a four-storey building opposite the Churiwala Panchayet Graveyard in Mukim Bazar.
The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain, a resident of Sharsha Upazila in Jashore and son of Abdul Khaleq. He lived in a rented flat on the third floor of the building and owned a motorcycle garage in Mukim Bazar.
Tushar Islam Rifat, an employee at Delwar’s motorcycle garage, Bike Park Centre, beside Mukim Bazar Mosque, said Nazmul Hossain, 33, who was also injured in the blast, worked at the same garage. Delwar also used the building’s ground floor as a warehouse for his business materials.
According to Rifat, a gas cylinder exploded on the ground floor in the early hours of Friday. Hearing the blast, Delwar and his cousin Nazmul rushed downstairs. Moments later, another explosion triggered a fire, trapping both men inside. Local residents managed to rescue Nazmul, but Delwar remained trapped. Firefighters later extinguished the blaze and recovered his body.
Rifat said the building owner lived on the second floor and that the cooking gas cylinder used by the owner had been stored in the ground-floor warehouse, where it exploded and sparked the fire.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, said Delwar’s body had been kept at the morgue, while Nazmul was admitted to the hospital’s burn unit. Bangshal police are investigating the incident.
