30 October 2026 04:46 Updated: 30 October 2026 09:29

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh early Friday after completing a four-day official visit to Japan aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding trade, investment and economic cooperation.

A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying the prime minister, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and members of his entourage landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 2:48am on October 30, according to his Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Hossain Shadhin.

During the visit, Tarique held a bilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and discussed cooperation in trade, investment, energy, infrastructure, technology and other sectors.

Bangladesh and Japan signed six bilateral cooperation instruments and secured commitments for two yen-loan projects worth a combined 46.56 billion yen, equivalent to around US$295.5 million.

The two sides also discussed a proposed Japanese private investment of one trillion yen, or approximately US$6.3 billion, in Bangladesh.

The prime minister also met Japanese business leaders and visited industrial and energy facilities to explore investment opportunities and strengthen economic ties.

His return flight was delayed by nearly five hours due to a technical problem with the aircraft at Narita International Airport.

The issue was resolved by engineering teams, allowing the flight to depart late Thursday night. Source: Agencies.
