Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Mongla Port in Bagerhat on Thursday (November 5) to inaugurate the construction of two new container jetties aimed at expanding the port’s capacity.
During the visit, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for the Tk 4,068 crore project to expand and modernise port facilities.
The project is expected to boost the port’s cargo-handling capacity and strengthen Bangladesh’s international trade.
Of the total project cost, the Bangladesh government will provide Tk 475 crore, while China will finance the remaining Tk 3,593 crore under an agreement signed between the two countries on October 10.
The project includes a 368-metre-long container terminal, a container yard, facilities for handling dangerous cargo and 49 pieces of equipment.
Once operational, the port is expected to handle more than 30 containers per hour and achieve an annual handling capacity of 400,000 TEUs.
During the visit, an MoU is also scheduled to be signed between Invest Bangladesh and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), paving the way for improved railway connectivity with Mongla Port.
Following his engagements at the port, Tarique Rahman will visit the shrine of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali in Bagerhat before travelling to Khulna to inaugurate the second season of the ‘Notun Kuri Sports’ programme at Khulna District Stadium.
He is scheduled to return to Dhaka later in the afternoon.
The visit will be the Prime Minister’s second trip to Mongla since taking office. He previously visited the port and the Sundarbans on October 22. NEWS24 +2
