An inaugural rally of the 11-party opposition alliance has begun at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel, Dhaka, ahead of its long march to Chattogram on Saturday.
The rally began at around 7am with the recitation of the Holy Quran, as leaders and activists of the alliance started gathering at the venue.
The alliance, led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, is organising the long march to press for six demands, including implementation of the referendum verdict, a fair trial for the July massacre, an end to shortages of electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser, control of rising prices of essential commodities, an improvement in law and order, and an end to politicisation and corruption.
Following the rally at Shapla Chattar, the procession is scheduled to head towards Chattogram.
The programme is expected to conclude with a rally at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram in the afternoon. Organisers have said nearly 1,500 vehicles are expected to join the long march.
The alliance has described the programme as a peaceful political campaign and called for cooperation to ensure that the long march proceeds smoothly.
