Britain’s Green Party has formally adopted a policy declaring Zionism to be “a form of racism.” The motion was approved by a majority vote at the party’s annual conference in Brighton on Sunday, October 4.
A total of 1,022 members voted in favour of the motion, while 813 voted against it. The decision means the party’s official policy in England and Wales will now treat Zionism as a form of racism.
The party said the motion defines Zionism as an “ethno-nationalist political project” and rejects equating opposition to Zionism with antisemitism.
The motion also reaffirmed the party’s support for Palestinian independence, the right of Palestinians to return to their homeland, and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel. It also called for a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel.
A Green Party spokesperson said the party is “an anti-racist party” and has consistently opposed what it describes as the illegal occupation of Palestinian and Syrian territories.
In 2024, the Green Party became the first political party in England and Wales to vote in favour of recognising the Israeli government as an “apartheid” state. At the time, the party cited international legal frameworks including the 1973 International Convention on Apartheid and the 1998 Rome Statute.
The latest motion, titled “Zionism Is Racism,” was proposed by a group called Greens for Palestine, according to The Guardian. The motion argues that Zionism gives preferential treatment to one ethnic group by subordinating others.
The motion also clarifies that its aim is to challenge Zionism as a political ideology and practice, rather than target the religious or ethnic identity of individuals who identify as Zionists. Source: Agencies.
