US President Donald Trump has said Ukraine needs a new president, responding to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s criticism of a US deal involving Russian diesel supplies.

The United States recently announced plans to import energy from Russia. Zelensky warned that the deal would allow millions of tonnes of Russian diesel to be supplied to the US, generating revenue for Moscow to continue its war against Ukraine. He described the agreement as a “gift” to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Saturday, Trump accused Zelensky of creating problems for the world by allowing Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries.

“He should stop doing that,” Trump said, adding that Ukraine needed a new leader who could negotiate a deal.

Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, preventing elections from being held.

Global energy supplies have been severely disrupted by the US-Israeli war against Iran, which has effectively halted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Around one-fifth of the world’s oil products normally pass through the strategic waterway.

Russia, a major global energy supplier, and Ukraine have recently intensified attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure and transport networks, further tightening energy markets.

“We told them, you can do whatever you want against Russia, but don’t hit the oil refineries. That creates problems worldwide,” Trump said.
