At least 78 people have been killed and more than 215 injured in devastating Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past two days. Amid the casualties, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sharply criticised Washington, accusing it of being unwilling to help Kyiv and showing little genuine commitment to ending the war, Reuters reported.
His remarks came shortly after a Russian airstrike destroyed two passenger buses in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, causing heavy casualties.
At least 35 people were killed and another 20 injured in the airstrike, which directly hit the passenger buses. Local Governor Vadym Filashkin said Russia was deliberately targeting civilians. A day earlier, a Russian missile strike on a five-storey building in Pryluky killed 22 people, while further casualties were reported in Kyiv and other cities. Visiting the site of the destruction, Zelensky said 78 people had been killed across the country in two days.
In an emotional statement following the attacks, Zelensky strongly criticised US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s remarks that the war had reached a “dangerous stalemate”.
Responding to Rubio’s assessment, Zelensky said, “Where is the stalemate here? This is not a stalemate; it is actually the United States’ unwillingness to provide assistance.”
He also expressed frustration over reports that senior US officials, including special envoy Jared Kushner, were discussing future economic ties with Moscow, including potential US investment in the Nord Stream gas pipeline, while citing diplomatic deadlock as a reason for the lack of progress. He described this approach as deeply contradictory.
