US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would be arranged “very soon,” expressing optimism about diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war

“There’ll be a meeting set up very soon and I think a lot of progress could be made,” Trump told reporters.

The proposed meeting would bring the leaders of the two countries together as diplomatic efforts continue to seek an end to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.

Trump has made ending the war a central foreign policy priority and has repeatedly expressed his desire to secure a negotiated settlement. However, any direct talks between Putin and Zelensky would face major challenges, including disagreements over occupied Ukrainian territory, security guarantees for Kyiv and the terms of a potential ceasefire.

Russia and Ukraine have maintained conflicting positions on the conditions for ending the fighting. Kyiv has stressed the need to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, while Moscow has demanded concessions that Ukraine has rejected.

A meeting between the two presidents could provide an opportunity to discuss these differences, although its timing, format and agenda have not been confirmed in Trump’s remarks.

The announcement also comes amid continued international efforts to find a diplomatic path towards ending the conflict, which has caused extensive destruction, civilian casualties and displacement while disrupting regional security and global economic ties.
