Bangladesh made a nightmare start to their Asian Games campaign as the women’s hockey team suffered a 13-0 defeat to powerhouse China in Kawasaki, Japan, on Saturday.
China dominated from the opening whistle at the Kawasaki Shuko Stadium, with Zhong Jiaqi opening the scoring in the fourth minute. Bangladesh struggled to cope with the relentless Chinese attacks throughout the match.
Zhong Jiaqi struck again in the 13th and 29th minutes to complete her hat-trick, while Chen Yang scored twice in the first half as China took a commanding lead before the break.
The Chinese dominance continued after halftime, with Zhou Meirong, Chen Yi, Li Hong, Zhang Ying, Ma Ning and Yang Liu all finding the net as China completed a 13-goal rout.
Zhong Jiaqi scored three goals for China, while Chen Yang, Zhou Meirong and Chen Yi scored twice each. Li Hong, Zhang Ying, Ma Ning and Yang Liu added one goal apiece.
Bangladesh failed to score throughout the match and could create little threat in the Chinese defensive circle. Bangladesh’s Kona Akter was shown a yellow card late in the game.
The defeat came after Bangladesh’s men’s team also began their Asian Games hockey campaign with a heavy loss, going down 5-0 to South Korea in their opening match.
Bangladesh women will play Malaysia in their second Pool A match on Sunday.
